Fishing at lake Paatari

Paatari

Is there a better way to relax than by catching whopping fish in picturesque surroundings with the family? We did not have fishing experience before going to Lapland. We have heard and read that in Lapland you can find easily accessible fishing. Even beginners can easily experience the thrill of catching their own fish here.

Our cottage stood at the lake Paatari which has clear and cool waters and therefore also lots of fish. Lake Paatari is connected with the very famous Inari lake through the Vaskjoki.

In Finland you need a permit to go to fish even if you own the lake. Fishing is permitted in accordance with general regulations and with the consent with the owner of the water area. Fishing permits can be obtained from local issuers, in Inari you can buy it from Sami museum. Fishing permit is required for every fisherman at least 18 years old.

At first day we used the equipment taken with us - perches. This was not successful trial but I think fishing the catching itself is not the most important activity but the process itself is.

Our very friendly neighbors saw that we are not experienced fishermen and helped us. At first they taught us how to use the spinning and showed us where to fish. After that we were so excited that we went to local shop and bought the gear (spinning, tackle, etc.) for ourselves.

After setting the equipment to order the trial was made from the cape next to the house. Although it was already late, it was not dark and we caught first perca fish. It tasted so good!

We caught more perca fish and trout on the following days. An one day we were very lucky to catch a pike weighted 3kg. For us it seemed that we have got something very special. But we heard from Vilho that Samis do not value pike, they are more up to catching trout.

At the last day, Vilho took us to fishing with nets. We experienced both - net setting and net taking. Net setting was in the evening and taking at the next morning. We caught this way some 15 fishes - a pike, salmons and percas. Vilho cleaned them and later, in the afternoon, we smoked the fish and had an excellent picnic.
